The name Hillsborough was given in 1766 in honor of the Earl of Hillsborough who was a British secretary of state for the colonies. 

This rich history can be seen in the number of historic sites located throughout the town, which consist of over 100 buildings from the late 18th and 19th century. History buffs will certainly have a nonstop source of wonders to discover, from bridges, mills, dams, and relics from the Native Americans who lived her for millennia. Some of the most noteworthy historic buildings are The Inn at Teardrops, Old Orange County Courthouse, Margaret Lane Cemetery, and Ayr Mount, to name a few.

Residents and visitors alike relish in the culture of the town, with arts and entertainment during the Last Fridays celebrations, and events such as the BBQ lover’s celebration known as Hog Day. There are also new parks and public spaces being added that further enrich the area. You’ll also enjoy shopping in the Downtown Hillsborough stores, which include a wide range of stores for every interest.
