If you're a mountain biking enthusiast and you live in the Triangle area - or are planning to make the move soon - here are three 'must-try' trail locations in Chapel Hill and Wake County.

Briar Chapel

Briar Chapel is known for being the Triangle's largest green community, covering 1,589 acres of mixed-use land. If you are a serious mountain biker, the competitive 15 mile trail that was developed in partnership with The Triangle Off-Road Cyclists will have your adrenaline pumping with its single-track, 18-inch wide trail that winds around the expansive community. Since these trails opened in 2008, TORC has frequently hosted riding events here.

When you make the trip to Briar Chapel for a ride, park in the neighborhood by the marquee... and make sure you're ready for a workout on a tight and windy trail!

The Trails at Harris Lake

The Trails at Harris Lake, which is located at 2112 County Park Drive in New Hill, NC, offers three levels of difficulty: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. The great thing about these 7.7 miles' worth of trails? They each offer an incredible view of the lake! The trails are a stacked loop system, and the further away from the parking lot you go, the longer the trails and the more obstacles you come upon. Trails are clearly marked and offer arrows showing the quickest way to the parking lot from advanced trails.

Harris Lake is ideal for the novice mountain biker as the blue (beginner) trail is one of the most smooth trails in the Triangle and is only 0.7 miles long. The yellow (intermediate) and red (advanced) trails are designed for keeping an elevated heart rate. The narrow yellow loop has plenty of changes in elevation and long jumps and is two miles long, whereas the red loop is 5 miles in length and provides a series of challenging loops for experienced bikers.

Lake Crabtree

Lake Crabtree was the first to present bike trails in the Triangle. Since it is so close to RTP, it has grown in popularity and is often found to be quite busy. Highland Trail, as it's called, maintains a series of loops for the beginner to the intermediate biker. It is shared by walkers, joggers and bikers, each party being responsible for the other's safety. The trail can be accessed three different ways: 1) Through the park, 2) Cary's Black Creek Greenway, and 3) William B. Umstead State Park by taking the part of the Lake Trail by I-40.

Take advantage of the beautiful weather here in the Triangle and enjoy one or all of these mountain bike trails this spring and summer!
