Finally, the first day of fall is here! Cool breezes sweeping across your face, crisp apple pie and cider, and leaves aflame with color. These are a few of our favorite fall things, as well as....THE STATE FAIR!! This much anticipated event -- where fried cheesecake, Krispy Kreme donut hamburgers and funnel cakes collide -- will start on Raleigh's fairgrounds October 16 and run until October 26

So why is the State Fair such a big deal to North Carolinians? HERITAGE. It all began in October 1853 when the North Carolina State Agricultural Society decided, due to poor agricultural practices, that it was time for NC farmers to adopt scientific methods for farming. The society hoped to use the fair to show and teach thousands of farmers the best farming practices and methods. The State Fair experienced a few hiccups along the way (e.i. Civil War, bankruptcy), but in 161 years it has grown to attract more than 1,000,000 people every year and holds the title for being "the state's oldest and most important annual celebration." (quoted from NCPedia)

As much as we love the NC State Fair, we can't help but also love the upcoming festivals that are right on our doorstep in Chapel Hill. On October 5, head to historic West Franklin Street in downtown Chapel Hill for the 42nd annual Festifall Arts Festival where visitors can enjoy a mixture of performing arts and an array of handmade pieces. Then on October 9-11, come experience the 5th annual TerraVITA food and wine festival, where "North Carolina chefs and artisans committed to sustainable practices" are brought together for a series of events catered to educating and pleasing your palate.
