Home Improvement Projects That Add Big Value To Your Home

by AH for Masha Halpern

Even if you don't have the funds or the energy for a big improvement project or remodel, small changes can make your home a more enjoyable place to live, increase its value, and help you command the best possible price when you sell.

Exchange light fixtures for ceiling fans.A stylish new ceiling fan instantly updates a room and can add value to your home. Choose fans that create a rustic vintage look or add a cool island vibe to an outdoor patio.

Replace your kitchen faucet and sink.If your sink is chipped and stained, or your faucet is grungy, new fixtures will make food prep and washing dishes more enjoyable. Even a basic but deeper stainless steel basin will sparkle, and a pullout faucet will add a modern touch.

Other simple changes in the kitchen and bathrooms can have a huge impact.A new backsplash can tie together the colors in your counters, floors and cabinets and can be an easy do-it-yourself project. New drawer and door knobs are a lovely addition. Adding a medicine cabinet or changing the mirror in a bathroom will instantly update the room.

Simple tips like these can create a happier, healthier and more valuable home. Thank you for thinking of me for all of your real estate needs, and be sure to share my contact information with anyone you know of looking to buy, sell or invest in a home.

Back to School: Preparing Your Home to Manage Clutter

by EM for Masha Halpern

The start of a new school year means an endless bombardment of homework sheets, permission slips, school flyers, and art projects. And with backpacks, gym bags, lunch boxes, and library books it’s hard to maintain order. Keep your home organized and decluttered this back-to-school season with these helpful tips!

A Paperwork System

Creating a system for the influx of paper is not only a great way to stay organized and get things accomplished, it also can be a way for kids to learn important skills and responsibilities. One good option is an open file box, which allows for easy access, labeling, and color coding. Three-ring binders are also great because tabs can be used for different subjects/categories and dividers with pockets can store smaller items that you don’t want to hole punch. Looking for more ways to organize your papers? Check out this article for more creative ideas!

Master Schedule/Calendar

Between back-to-school nights, parent conferences, sports practices, and more, it’s nearly impossible to keep the whole family’s appointments and activities in your head. That’s why keeping a master schedule or calendar in a convenient place like on the refrigerator door or in a high-traffic hallway will make everything go more smoothly. It helps to use different color markers for each family member and stickers/pictures for children too young to read. For more inspiration, explore this blog.

The Homework Zone

Finding the right time and place for homework is key to your child’s academic success. Will homework be the first thing they do when they get home from school or do they need time to play and unwind before starting? When choosing a place in your home consider the conditions your child will thrive best under. A kitchen table is great spot to sit down and focus while still having family nearby when assistance is needed. A bedroom desk is better for those who prefer limited distractions. Just make sure there is good lighting available and homework tools like pencils, erasers, highlighters, glue sticks, and scissors easily accessible!

Art Work

It’s inevitable that your kids will bring home their school work, projects, and art from school. So it’s up to you to decide, whether you want to display it, store it, or toss it. Check out this article for creative ways to showcase your child’s artwork!

Assigning Places

The first thing kids should do when they get home is empty backpacks, lunch boxes, and gym bags. Consider mounting backpacks on hooks and assigning a specific hook or space for each child. This way when you’re rushing out the door to make the bus, they’ll know exactly where their backpack and jacket is. Not only will their items stay off the floor and not be misplaced, everyone will be getting a head start on the next day. Installing a bench or seat with storage is also great for putting dirty shoes, umbrellas, and cold weather accessories.

Staying organized is within reach, just follow these helpful tips!

For over 100 years, the tobacco industry reigned supreme, spurring growth throughout the city of Durham. Thus, when large cigarette manufacturers like Lucky Strike and Bull Durham closed the doors of the American Tobacco factory in 1987, it triggered a wave of economic decline. With the goal of preserving the rich history and revitalizing Durham, Capitol Broadcasting Company, the owner of the Durham Bulls, purchased the 16-acre American Tobacco Campus in 2002. After investing $200 million in design and renovation, the historic area re-opened in 2004, catalyzing the Durham Renaissance.

Now, the American Tobacco Historic District includes office, residential, and commercial spaces, a barber shop, salon, spa, and numerous art centers. Deemed “The Startup Hub of the South,” the American Tobacco Campus houses the American Underground, an area for entrepreneurs on the cutting edge of technology to build progressive companies while paying homage to the entrepreneurial success stories of the past. However, the American Tobacco Campus isn’t all business, networking, and conferences. Between broadway shows at DPAC, baseball games at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, and the Full Frame Theater, the American Tobacco Campus focuses on creating spaces for artists to thrive and the public to enjoy.

American Tobacco Music hosts On the Lawn, an outdoor concert series celebrating North Carolina’s unique music heritage. Sponsored by WUNC (91.5), the concert is free and open to the public. The grammy-nominated Americana band Yarn and The Road Band will perform in the next show on Thursday, August 23 at 6:00 pm. You’re encouraged to bring your own lawn chairs and picnic blankets, but you can always grab a seat at nearby restaurants like Cuban Revolution or Tyler’s Restaurant and Taproom. Also, keep an eye out for upcoming concerts in the nearby area. The On the Lawn concert series has expanded to the outfield section of the Durham Bulls Athletic Park and the Down Under Patio near Saladelia. Bring your dog and kids, relax by the stunning water feature, and enjoy the best of what Durham has to offer at the American Tobacco Campus!
