Celebrating Summer & Ice Cream - Locopops Style!

by AH for Masha Halpern

What could be better than delicious locally made Ice Cream on a HOT SUMMER DAY???

We have the Answer! Sharing delicious Locopops while enjoying live music by The Tim Wells Music Trio with our clients as we celebrated National Ice Cream Day!

Together we ate over 45 locopops & scoops and had a chance to catch up with everyone who attended. Locopops’ party room was the perfect place to escape the heat while enjoying some bluegrass music.

We also celebrated as you all won lots of door prizes - Congratulations to the winners  - Shawn MacDuff, Ben Dictus, Paul Sylvestre, Sue Kudler, Carli Opland!

And we never miss out on a chance to make a difference in our community. With the help of our guests, we collected two large baskets of food items for TABLE, a local charity that provides emergency food aid to hungry children. We were thrilled to have Deryl Daniels from TABLE join us at this event. Thanks everyone for your generosity! Many children will have lunch as a result of your goodwill!

A special thank you to our sponsor, Whitney Bulbrook for partnering with us, to Tim Wells for the swinging music, to Satsuki Scoville Photography for amazing photos and to Locopops for YUMMY ice cream!

Enjoy some of the pictures below and click here to see the full event on our website. Stay cool!

Durham’s Connection to the Hit Netflix Show, Stranger Things

by EM & AH for Masha Halpern

Amid much anticipation & excitement, Netflix’s Emmy-winning show Stranger Things returned July 4, 2019 for its third season. Watch the trailer here!

The series follows a group of adventurous middle school-age friends that encounter supernatural forces and government secrets. Inspired by 80’s books and movies like “The Goonies,” “E.T.,” and “It,” the show pays homage to pop-culture classics from that era to create a nostalgia-filled, action-packed fan-favorite.

As some local watchers have noticed, the show also pays tribute to Durham, North Carolina. The fictional town of Hawkins, where the story takes place, is laced with references to Durham. This is no coincidence as the hit sci-fi show is written, directed, and produced by Durham natives, Matt and Ross Duffer.

The Duffer Brothers, as they are professionally known, attended Duke School from elementary to middle school and later Charles E. Jordan High School. Growing up, they made videos in their neighborhood during the summer using a camera their parents gave them and attended films at the Carolina Theater. Drawing inspiration from their own childhoods in Bull City, the characters are seen trick-or-treating in Lochn’ora neighborhood and riding their bikes along Cornwallis and Kerley Roads. The Eno Rock Quarry, Jordan Lake, Lover’s Leap, Mt. Sinani Road, and even their neighbor growing up gets a mention!

Joining in on the fun, the Durham Bulls will host a “Stranger Things” night for the second year in a row. This year, it will take place on July 11 and fans are encouraged to wear ‘80s clothing or dress up as their favorite characters. The team will sport uniforms that reference the character Eleven’s, proclivity for flannel shirts and waffles and they will be auctioned off after the game with proceeds benefiting Children’s Flight of Hope. More info about the event can be found here

However you choose to experience the Upside Down, whether you are starting from season one, bingeing season three, or headed to the Bulls tribute game, a strange adventure awaits you this summer!

Festival for the Eno - 40th Anniversary

by EM for Masha Halpern

“Like a giant backyard barbecue for the creative class: it’s homey and raucous, full of music, dancing, crafts and sweaty kids slurping giant glasses of lemonade.”

                                -The New York Times

The Festival for the Eno is a celebration that brings the community together through music, art, food, and mutual love and respect for the Eno River! Held annually by the Eno River Association in Durham, the festival raises awareness and funds to protect and preserve the wildlife and natural areas in the Eno River Basin.

This Independence Day weekend marks the event’s 40th anniversary and takes place over the course of two days - Thursday July 4th and Saturday July 6th from 10am to 6pm.

So what draws more than 20,000 people to the banks of the Eno for the festival each year? It is one of the premier art and folk festivals in the Southeast. This year alone there are over 70 bands located across 5 stages playing a mix of contemporary and traditional music, 80 regional craft and artisan booths, and 20 local food trucks and vendors attending the event.

There are also hands-on activities for the whole family to enjoy like learning to “throw” a pot on a potter’s wheel, face painting, canoeing and kayaking, weaving, gardening, Old Time and ukulele jam sessions, and much more!

For more info, check out the festival’s website here
