Mold - Be aware of dangers

by
As homeowners we should be aware of the existence and dangers of mold in our homes and how to address the issue before it gets out of control. A lot of times we are unaware that mold may be growing in the corners behind appliances after a water leak, or in the walls of our bathrooms without proper ventilation which is a “growing” concern if you are looking to sell your home.

Realty Times Columnist, Phoebe Chongchua has written an informative article that explains the seriousness of mold in our homes and what to look for in a home that you may want to purchase. Read the following article to familiarize yourself with some of the more common signs.
Briana Corke Selected District Teacher of the Year

Carrboro Elementary School teacher Briana Corke was selected the district Teacher of the Year for 2008-09.  Karen Galassi-Ferrer, East Chapel Hill High School, and Kay Lawson-Demery, Chapel Hill High School, were named Honor Teachers.

Corke, who teaches the fourth grade Spanish Dual Language class, was named the Gold Star Teacher by SunTrust and presented with a check for $1,000 and various gift certificates from local area businesses.

Corke has four years of teaching experience. She began her teaching career in 2003 when she came to Carrboro Elementary.  She holds a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education and a bachelor of arts degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

She earned her National Board Certification in 2007 as a Middle Childhood Generalist; was a Kenan Fellow from 2006-08; and received the Excellence in Elementary Science Teaching Award from UNC-Greensboro.

Corke is the Grade Level Chair at Carrboro Elementary.  She serves on the school's Leadership Committee and is the Student Services Team Co-Chair.  She has also been a mentor teacher for novice teachers since 2005.  She organized and facilitated the school's Hispanic Parent Night in February 2008.  She also does home visits for struggling students, meeting with families in their homes to share strategies and activities that can be done at home to support students' learning.

She is a Guardian ad Litum for Orange and Chatham county, as well as working with Carolina Teachers Connection, mentoring recent graduates.

She reflected on the path that led her to the classroom:

"In choosing to become a teacher, I wanted to examine how students' resilient attributes could be utilized in making them high achievers instead of at risk for academic failure.  I feel now, as I did when I chose to become a teacher, that all children are capable of academic excellence, regardless of their hardships."

"As a teacher, I am whole heartedly committed to academic excellence and high growth for all my students.  To help each of my students to address their individual goals, I need to be willing to accept help in small group lessons, when working with a peer, or when coming to have a 'lunch date' with me to work individually," she added.

Regarding her own beliefs about teaching, Corke said she works to help all of her students recognize that each person comes with a set of strengths they can use to help others and to look around themselves for help, too.

Corke will represent the district at the next level in regional competition.
