Bringing the Holiday Spirit to our Clients and the Community

by AH for Masha Halpern

This year marked our 7th Annual Holiday “Party with a Purpose”! Our Pie Giveaway was a great opportunity for us to tell our current & past clients how much they are appreciated and to allow us to work together to give back to our community.

We handed out 25 Thanksgiving Pies this year & had a chance to catch up with everyone who attended! In addition to the coffee & cocoa bar, a crowd favorite this year was a special adorable puppy being fostered by one of our clients.

It was really meaningful for us to share in the holiday spirit and offer opportunities to write cards for Veterans & donate food for TABLE! Thanks to everyone for your generosity! We delivered a stack of your handwritten thank yous to veterans at the VA Hospital in Durham & lifted a lot of spirits!! We also delivered several boxes of food to Table, our local organization to help feed school children.

One of our favorite things about this party is the opportunity to introduce so many of you to each other!  Being able to help foster connections is a bonus and one that I want to keep growing. If you have a service, run a business, or would like to start a group (something fun or something serious) let me know. Please think of me as a “connector”! I’m pleased to continue to be a referral source for you.

A VERY special thank you to Mark Sommer of Pillar to Post Home Inspections for providing the raffle prizes (Yeti Mugs) and for partnering with us to make this event happen! Mark is our trusted home inspector and we are lucky to have him as part of our team!

AND NOW TO ANNOUNCE THE WINNERS…..!   Harold Kudler and Nellie Cavender have each won a Yeti Rambler insulated mug!!!  Enjoy coffee, cocoa, oatmeal, chili, peach cobbler and so much more with these mugs.

We want to thank each and every one of you for coming to YOUR party and allowing us to express our gratitude for your friendship and business!  We are honored to give back to our clients.  Thank you so much for your continued referrals to friends and family!

Enjoy some of the pictures below and click here to see the full event on our website.

Keep an eye out for upcoming client appreciation events in the Spring! Please share some ideas for things you would like to see us try out!

Need a break from all the hustle and bustle? Enjoy these big and small screen movies & shows that will leave you with lots of holiday cheer!

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and along with football and pumpkin pie, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is an American tradition.

Head to the theater for the new release of The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, with a star-filled cast including Keira Knightley, Helen Mirren & Morgan Freeman.

Chapel Hill’s Silverspot Cinema offers the big screen experience for classic holiday movies. The 2018 Flashback Theater movies include the classics Home Alone, Elf, It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Story, and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

Often movies can become part of your holiday tradition. Each year I write my holiday cards while watching some of our favorite holiday shows on TV! Home Alone is a family favorite for April’s family and Masha’s family loves to spin the dreidel and ‘gamble’ their pennies throughout the season.

Whether it’s a family comedy or a romantic yuletide story, settle in and get cozy with some popcorn and a cup of hot cocoa - and relax!

Have a favorite holiday movie? We’d love to hear what it is - and why you love it so much!

Time to Re-Set Your Clocks! Daylight Savings Reminder & A Little History

by AH for Masha Halpern

It’s that time of year our clocks and changing the batteries in our smoke detectors has become an unmistakable sign of the change of seasons. But what exactly is Daylight Saving Time and how did it get started? Below are excerpts from an article in the Farmers’ Alamanac that will help explain some of the mystery. Enjoy!

Daylight Saving Time is the practice of changing the clocks forward one hour from standard time during the summer months, and changing them back again in the fall. Find out when the seasons start here. The general idea is that this allows us all to make better use of natural daylight, however, DST has many detractors.

Note that the process is officially called “Daylight Saving Time,” but is more commonly known as “Daylight Savings Time”. Use whichever you prefer!

When do we set our clocks back? Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 4, 2018 at 2:00 A.M.  We “fall back” by setting your clocks back one hour (i.e., regaining one hour).

When do we set our clocks forward? Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, March 10, 2019 at 2:00 A.M.  Remember to “spring ahead” and set your clocks forward 1 hour (i.e., losing one hour). (We do this Saturday night when we go to bed.)

(The exceptions to DST are Arizona, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and American Samoa.)

Here’s the short history of this phenomenon …

Credit for Daylight Saving Time belongs to Benjamin Franklin, who first suggested the idea in 1784. The idea was revived in 1907, when William Willett, an Englishman, proposed a similar system in the pamphlet The Waste of Daylight.

The Germans were the first to officially adopt the light-extending system in 1915 as a fuel-saving measure during World War I. The British switched one year later, and the United States followed in 1918, when Congress passed the Standard Time Act, which established our time zones. This experiment lasted only until 1920, when the law was repealed due to opposition from dairy farmers (cows don’t pay attention to clocks).

During World War II, Daylight Saving Time was imposed once again (this time year-round) to save fuel. Since then, Daylight Saving Time has been used on and off, with different start and end dates. Currently, Daylight Saving Time begins at 2:00 A.M. on the second Sunday of March and ends at 2:00 A.M. on the first Sunday in November.
