Maple View Farms Celebrates National Ice Cream Day!

by EM & AH for Masha Halpern

Located in the Hillsborough countryside, Maple View Farms serves scenic views alongside their freshly churned Southern ice cream. Before Maple View Farms opened their doors on New Year's Day in 2001, they were selling bottled milk to faithful customers in the community. After finding success with their high-quality milk, Robert Nutter, the founder of Maple View Farms, and his daughter Muffin, decided the community might enjoy their handcrafted ice cream as well. So, they made their dream a reality and began with 12 simple flavors. Since then, Maple View Farms has developed hundreds of more flavors, won countless awards, expanded to new locations around the Triangle, and brought their delicious products to grocery stores near you!

Community is very important to Maple View Farms. That’s why they designed the Maple View Agricultural Center, a non-profit educational facility open to people of all ages to learn about sustainable agriculture and farm life. The AG Center is open year-round for field trips, birthday parties, and events like family reunions and wedding receptions. In the warmer months, the AG Center offers classroom lessons on the dairy process, insects, and plants along with guided barnyard animal tours and hayrides at affordable prices. Check out the Maple View AG Center today!

Mark your calendars everyone! National Ice Cream Day falls on July 15th and Maple View Farms is holding an event to celebrate. Join the crowd of ice cream lovers and aficionados for live music by the Mason Lovette Band and Back Porch Orchestra, face painting, lawn games, ice cream specials, visit with a calf, and more. A percentage of all sales will go to Sam’s Wish Foundation at Kid’s Path of Hospice & Angels Among Us Benefiting the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke. See you there!

You can also join in with us on social media regardless of where you choose to celebrate the day. Upload a photo of yourself, friends & family enjoying ice cream, to twitter, facebook or instagram with the tag @MashaHalpern, and you’ll be entered to win a $15 gift certificate to Maple View Farms Store.

As we prepare for the winter season with recipes for holidays feasts and shopping for holiday gifts, it is important to remember to protect your most valuable possession - Your Home. To add to your ongoing Honey-Do List of House Maintenance, here is a maintenance checklist for getting your home ready for the winter months:

Interior

  • Check ceiling and surfaces around windows for evidence of moisture
  • Check caulking around showers, bathtubs, sinks, and toilet base
  • Check all stairs and railings for any loose members
  • Test all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Know the location of all gas shut-off valves

Electrical -

  • Periodically check for exposed wiring and cable, and replace as necessary
  • Trip circuit breaker and ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) to ensure proper function
  • Learn location of electrical service panels and label each circuit
  • If fuses blow, circuit breakers trip frequently, contact a licensed electrician for repairs

Heating and Cooling

  • Clean or change furnace filters (this should be done every 3 months)
  • Lubricate fan and motor bearings (only where indicated) and listen for unusual noises
  • For broiler systems, check water level and shut-off valve for leaks
  • Have system serviced annually prior to the start of the season

Doors and Windows

  • Check for loose or missing glazing putty or worn weather stripping
  • Check caulking for deterioration at the openings and joints between dissimilar materials (i.e. wood and masonry)
  • Check for broken glass and damaged or missing screens

Plumbing -

  • Check all faucets, hose bibs, and supply valves for leakage

Winter is approaching and soon it will be time to curl up with loved ones by the fire with a cup of cocoa on those cold winter nights. In anticipation of the cooler weather, now would be a good time to contact your chimney sweep contractor. Here are a few tips for maintaining your masonry/wood-burning fireplace or wood stove to add to your Honey-Do List of House Maintenance.

Chimney sweep - call your fireplace and chimney contractor or inspector NOW as chimney sweeps get booked early! Chimney sweeps should be done at least once a year prior to wintertime. The Chimney Safety Institute of America lists over 1,700 chimney sweeps that carry the Certified Chimney Sweep credential

Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors - replace batteries and test them.

Stock up on firewood - burn hard wood instead of soft wood as it efficiently delivers more heat. Ash, maple and oak are dense hard woods which are optimal to burn instead of the lighter soft woods like cedar, pine and poplar. Burn only seasoned dry wood; "green"wood doesn't burn as well and causes soot and creosote. Seasoned wood is wood that has been cut and dried under cover for at least 6 months.

Keep combustibles 12" away - carpets, drapes, and furniture should be at least 12" away from your fireplace when it is lit. A fireplace screen will help keep children and pets safe.

Clean out the ash - whenever it reaches the bottom of the grate to create efficient airflow. Wear a dust mask and gloves for safety.

Test out the function of your fireplace - open the damper and light a small piece of dry seasoned wood, making sure the smoke goes directly up the chimney. If smoke enters the room, then correct any problems.
